This special evening will see around 80 business leaders, arts patrons and philanthropists gather at Hippopotamus, one of New Zealand's finest restaurants.
Following pre-dinner drinks and the superb degustation dinner, the evening will see the auctioning of the signature artwork - a tapa full o'manu and a limited edition print series from that piece. Ten lunch or dinner occasions at Hippopotamus with a celebrity guest will also be auctioned. The auction will raise funds to support vital tsunami recovery work in Samoa, including the development of a community centre in the village of Poutasi.
None of us can forget the devastation on Samoa from the tsunami of September 2009. Families, homes and villages were torn apart. More than 18 months later, there is still much to do and project Heal & protect is a very practical response led by new Zealander Locky Mulholland.
The signature artwork - a tapa full o'manu is a stunning 1100mm x 1520mm painting on tapa cloth stretched over canvas; the tapa cloth used is sourced from the Pacific Islands. Created by artist Juliet Best it is to do with all manner of flying things typically native to Aotearoa and parts of the Pacific. Manu has dual meaning, referring to both a flying object and to launching or floating.
